As part of a recent survey for re-accreditation the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has awarded the Medical Society of Delaware Accreditation with Commendation as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians.
Accreditation with Commendation is only awarded to continuing medical education providers that demonstrate compliance in all 22 Criteria and Accreditation Policies. Not only has MSD met the ACCME's accreditation requirements, it has also demonstrated engagement with the health care environment in support of physician learning and change that is part of a system for quality improvement.
Murray Kopelow, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of the ACCME, offered MSD his personal congratulations on this significant achievement in CME.
This distinction is granted based on a review of MSD's self-study report submitted, evidence of performance in practice, and an accreditation interview with the ACCME. The ACCME employs a rigorous, multilevel process for evaluating institutions' continuing medical education programs according to the high accreditation standards adopted by all seven ACCME member organizations. These organizations of medicine in the US are the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and the Federation of State Medical Boards of the US, Inc.
ACCME accreditation seeks to assure the medical community and the public that MSD provides physicians with relevant, effective, practice-based continuing medical education that supports US health care quality improvement.  Physicians participating in MSD-sponsored CME can be assured of quality education which preserves physician competence and incorporates new ideas and knowledge to improve medical care for patients and the communities they serve.

Each year, accredited providers offer more than 125,000 continuing medical education activities in communities across the country drawing more than 23 million health care practitioner participants. There are more than 2,000 CME providers within the ACCME system.

MSD directly sponsors and jointly sponsors with organizations such as hospitals, community health organizations, specialty societies, and other health care organizations to provide CME for physicians.

The AMA defines CME (AMA Physician's Recognition Award and Credit System, 2010 Revision) as educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession. The content of CME is the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.

Organizations seeking MSD-sponsorship or joint-sponsorship for CME activities, such as conferences, symposia, lectures, grand rounds, case review conferences, journal clubs, journal articles, departmental scientific meetings, seminars, and workshops are encouraged to contact the Office of Professional and Public Education four to six months prior to the activity.

MSD will provide you with a CME Application and supporting documentation that will assist in the planning, development and evaluation of your activity.  Approval of your application is subject to review by members of the Professional and Public Education and Advocacy Committee for compliance with ACCME  Essentials and Standards.
