Considerations for Medical Providers Supporting Patients

Target Audience This activity is intended for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses. Statement of Need Individuals with I/DD are more likely to visit the hospital (Durbin, et al., 2018) than individuals without I/DD, yet EM staff often report feeling unprepared to provide accessible and inclusive care to this population (e.g., Spassiani, et al., 2020). A lack of training in I/DD has consistently been identified as a common area of need for EM staff (Hemm et al., 2015). Reports show that professionals often lack of familiarity with I/DD and project stigmatizing attitudes toward people with ID/D Educational Objectives Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to: Identify the characteristics of youth and adults with I/DD in order to utilize this information when evaluating and treating patients with I/DD. Identify strategies and practices for providing evidence-based emergency care to individuals with I/DD
